Churchill Downs Donates $50,000 to Volunteers of America for New Freedom House

LOUISVILLE, KY., (October 26, 2019) – Yesterday, several staff members from Churchill Downs Incorporated, Churchill Downs Racetrack and Derby City Gaming spent the morning volunteering on site at the Volunteers of America Mid-States's Shelby Recovery Center to commemorate a historic $50,000 donation from the company.

In a combined effort, Churchill Downs Incorporated and Derby City Gaming have donated $50,000 to Volunteers of America. The funds are directed toward the opening of a new Freedom House in Manchester, Kentucky, bringing the nonprofit's critical services to a new area of the Commonwealth.

With the facility's opening, residents of the region will have access to an addiction recovery center, which is a serious need due to the severity of the opioid epidemic in the area.

"When we think of the Kentucky Derby especially," Churchill Downs Incorporated Vice President of Corporate Communications Tonya Abeln shared, "we think about sort of achieving a dream against impossible odds, and I think that the purpose and mission of Volunteers of America really helps some of the most vulnerable citizens of Kentucky achieve that dream."

Prior to the check presentation, volunteers helped pack survival kits, hold and care for babies for Freedom House moms and lead field-day activities outside for men's recovery clients.
