Churchill Downs Team Members Volunteer with Aftercare Partner Second Stride as Part of 100 Days Countdown Celebration to Milestone 150th Kentucky Derby
LOUISVILLE, KY., (January 29, 2024) – Churchill Downs Racetrack (Churchill Downs) team members volunteered with Thoroughbred Aftercare Partner Second Stride in celebration of 100 days until the 150th Kentucky Derby. Team members assisted in cleaning various horse barns at Second Stride’s Chorleywood Farm location in Prospect, Kentucky. The volunteer work provided the now retired equine athletes integral to the sport of horse racing a renewed and loving home in care of the team at Second Stride.
This volunteer event builds upon Churchill Downs 150 days countdown to the milestone 150th Running of the Kentucky Derby. On milestone dates, team member volunteer events have been scheduled to give back to the local Louisville community that contributes to the magic and history of both Churchill Downs and the Kentucky Derby. To kick-start the 150 day countdown, team members volunteered with community partner New Directions in their Repair Initiative, providing critical home repairs to individuals living in the South Louisville neighborhoods surrounding the world famous racetrack.
Second Stride’s mission is to provide professional rehabilitation, retraining and placement of retired Thoroughbred racehorses with qualified adopters. They specialize in giving transitioning Thoroughbreds the proper care and quality training they need to succeed in something new. Since their founding in 2005, they have placed over 1,600 retired Thoroughbred racehorses and other Thoroughbreds in need with qualified adopters around the country.
