Churchill Downs Sponsors Speed Art Museum’s ‘Tales from the Turf’

LOUISVILLE, KY., (June 22, 2020– Thanks to a season-long partnership agreement, Churchill Downs Incorporated was able to serve as presenting sponsor of the Speed Art Museum’s “Tales from the Turf: The Kentucky Horse” exhibition. The first exhibit of its kind to examine Kentucky’s relationship with the horse through art, “Tales from the Turf” had nearly 40 lenders to the show that reflected the ways that images of the horse have represented the Commonwealth’s identity, history, mythology and agricultural economy, from its earliest days through the mid-20th century.

By presenting this locally fueled exhibition, the Speed demonstrated its role as the largest art museum in the state by fully embodying Kentucky’s rich history as the horse capital of the world. “Tales from the Turf” created the platform for many public programs and important community discussions including a presentation of “Black Race Horse Men” with Dr. Katherine Mooney, a Louisville Story Program panel featuring backside workers and a Kentucky owners panel. The Speed also had multiple After Hours events with art-making activities, special speakers’ panels and even an appearance from Gus, the live horse. These programs brought together statewide audiences through shared experiences at the Museum.

The exhibition was on display at Louisville’s Speed Art Museum November 15, 2019, through March 1, 2020. Of the exihibit, Forbes wrote, “With some one hundred paintings gathered from museums and private collections far and wide, the Speed Art Museum’s ambitious ‘Tales from the Turf: The Kentucky Horse, 1825 – 1950’ traces a true slice of Americana, all the way back to the roots of horse breeding culture.”
