Churchill Downs Racetrack Celebrates Inaugural Thoroughbred Aftercare Day

LOUISVILLE, KY., (October 02, 2023) – Churchill Downs Racetrack (“Churchill Downs”) today announced a successful Thoroughbred Aftercare Day held on September 30th, 2023. Guests in attendance were invited to discover more about the passion and dedication of six Churchill Downs aftercare partners. Aftercare Day served as both a celebration of each organization and an educational initiative as guests learned more about the integral work done to ensure equine athletes lead happy and healthy lives beyond their racing careers.

This inaugural celebration was dedicated to six extraordinary organizations that provide care for thoroughbreds across the racing industry. The organizations in attendance included:

– New Vocations Racehorse Adoption Program

– Retired Racehorse Project

– Second Stride Inc.

– The Secretariat Center

– Thoroughbred Aftercare Alliance

– Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation

Representatives from each organization were invited to join Churchill Downs team members and winning connections in the Woodford Reserve Winner’s Circle for various trophy presentations. Special trophies commemorating Aftercare Day were presented to the winner of three dedicated races. Throughout the day, the Churchill Downs broadcast team provided information about each non-profit and conducted interviews in the paddock to learn more about the important work they do for the racing industry.

As of September 2023, Churchill Downs Incorporated (“CDI”) has proudly donated over $75,000 to multiple aftercare partner organizations. “Thoroughbreds are such versatile athletes, we were delighted to feature organizations representing various phases of the aftercare spectrum at our inaugural Aftercare Day at Churchill Downs,” said Cathy Shircliff, Director of Equine Industry Relations for CDI. “Our team is committed to providing positive stewardship for the horseracing industry, and this celebratory day only furthers that mission.”
