Bundled up tight by his mother, 8-year-old John Sutton Jr. and his father boarded an old rickety streetcar and traveled up Fourth Street to Churchill Downs. They paid just a couple of dollars to enter and despite the weather, found themselves shoulder to shoulder in the crowd.
