About the Kentucky Derby Festival
2026 marks the 71st year for the Kentucky Derby Festival, a month-long celebration packed with 70+ events leading up to the first Saturday in May. As an independent community organization, it’s supported by 4,000 volunteers, more than 400 businesses and civic groups, Pegasus Pin sponsorships and event participation. It entertains more than 1.5 million people every spring and has a local economic impact of more than $200 million. This involvement has made the festival the largest single-attended event in Kentucky and one of the leading community celebrations in the world.
About the Pegasus Pin Program
The Pegasus Pin Program began as an awareness campaign for the Derby Festival in 1973. At that time, only 10,000 plastic pins were produced. The 1973 version of the pin is valued at $800-$1,000 and it’s rare to find them. Since then, the pins have become one of the primary sources of funding for Derby Festival events. Sponsorship investment is a way fans can support the Kentucky Derby Festival, a not-for-profit organization providing world-class entertainment. In recent years, more than 250,000 pins are produced each year. This year, there will be nearly 225,000 in circulation.
