At Churchill Downs Incorporated ("CDI"), nothing is more important than the safety and integrity of the sport of horse racing.
We place the highest priority on the health, welfare and safety of the equine and human athletes at our facilities every day, in every race.
On March 2, 2009, CDI was a leader in announcing a set of groundbreaking new rules and policies designed to enhance the safety and welfare of jockeys and horses competing at CDI facilities. CDI worked with many groups and organizations to develop the foundation of these policies, including The Jockey Club, the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association, the Racing Medication and Testing Consortium, the Breeders’ Cup, Keeneland Race Course, the NTRA, the veterinarians who are part of the American Association of Equine Practitioners, and the horsemen in many states.
These measures and further safety enhancements remain in place at all CDI racetracks, who are all fully accredited by the NTRA Safety and Integrity Alliance. We continue to work with others in the Thoroughbred Industry to raise the bar in safety at all points: pre-race, in-race and post-race. Because at our facilities, safety begins long before the horses take to the track. Safety is a focus from start to finish.
In addition, a specials exhibit was established at Churchill Downs Racetrack, the company's flagship facility in Louisville, Ky., that showcases CDI's commitment to safety. The interactive "Safety Center" utilizes audio, video and actual material and equipment samples to educate fans about the numerous policies and procedures in place to ensure the safety, security and well-being of horses and riders at the track.
